Many factors were involved in the Revolution. To a certain degree, the Monarchy succumbed to their own inflexibility in a changing world, the resurgence of the aristocracy also had a part to play and also the discontentment of the lower classes, no less important was the spreading of new liberal ideas which gained popularity during that era and which were known as “Enlightment” (liberté, fraternité, egalité). This all meant much higher expenditure for the State and the lowering of standards for the working classes and peasants. – This produced resentment of the privileged classes and the domination of public life by an ambitious professional class.
